Love Thyself

If you haven't cried yet today, you will when you read a copy of A Better Day - A Better Life. Kelly Wilson sent me an excerpt of her book, which was inspired after she had hit rock bottom in her own Better day life. Her baby and her mother-in-law (unrelated events) died within the same time period. Her husband landed in the ICU and she was forced to stay on the curb even when she really wanted to thrust herself into traffic. That is, until one day she woke up to discover she could make her day better, even at the darkest moment in her life.

She established a model of relationship - with herself, with others, and with God. Whether you are a practicing Christian or not is immaterial. Her message hits home. You can't love anyone, including your own life, until you love yourself.

I was moved by her candor. I think you will be, too. Grab a copy. You'll be glad you did.

Shut-Down Learners Revealed

Shut down When Dr. Richard Selznick, director of the Cooper Learning Center at Cooper University Hospital, approached me with his new book,The Shut-Down Learner: Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child, I was intrigued. My son has shown signs of slow learning, although tests indicate he has above average intelligence and an enormous capacity for concentration and focus. Reading through his new book, I realized my son is not at all a shut-down learner (SDL), but an active, engaged student with fantastic reading abilities and whose learning pace matches his own style. SDLs have trouble reading and comprehending language, a totally different animal to my highly active, athletic kid.

So I read through the book and discovered there's another child I know in my daughter's fourth grade class who struggles with the very things Dr. Selznick reveals - anger, frustration, disengaged behavior (with a large dose of bullying tossed into the mix). She has been diagnosed as dyslexic, but the school has done little to actually manage the issue. As a consequence, my daughter and she get into arguments (and yes, combative behavior). It is no wonder, then, that the child herself is stewing in her own frustration and letting it out on mine.

The Shut-Down Learner is a fabulous guide for parents whose kids have 'shut down' after years of shame and embarassement for 'not getting it' along with the rest of the class. As a former special education instructor, Dr. Selznick offers many examples of children whose special blend of challenges spanned their emotional, academic, and in some cases, physical realms. He offers hands-on help, citing Websites such as Great Leaps to correct remedial reading issues. The key point for shut-down learners is their skills often lay in the visual-spatial realm, that is working with their hands. I found the book to be highly engaging (and relieving to learn my son is not in danger of shutting down, at least for the reasons named in Dr. Selznick's book). Grab a copy, and share with your friends. You'll be glad you did.

Weighing In on Dara Chadwick's Book 'You'd Be So Pretty If...'

Shape magazine's former Weight-Loss Diary columnist, Dara Chadwick, has penned an intriguing new book about raising daughters with a healthy body awareness entitled, 'You'd be so pretty if...teaching our daughters to love their bodies -- even when we don't love our own'. The title alone piqued my interest, not because I have body image issues, but because I have been touched by people with eating disorders in my own life.

You'd be so pretty While reading the book, I waffled between a 'you go girl' and 'you've got to be kidding me' attitude. The book is keenly American in its understanding of body image and appearance. When I think about German culture, they are far more interested in being right than looking good. Interestingly, childhood obesity is becoming more of an issue in Germany as teen lifestyles become more sedentary, too. She wrote the book after completing a year-long public weight-loss program as a columnist for Shape magazine. Glancing at Shape's most recent Web site offerings, I couldn't help but worry at first about the writer's hypocrisy (à la it's okay to read and write for women's magazines advocating killer abs as long as you let your daughters know the photos are fake - the image and its conflicting message remain, however).

Shape.com cries out 'Flat Abs in Record Time,' promises the 'Cellulite Solution - Workout', offers up an opportunity to 'Give Yourself a Lift', manhandle your soul shell with this: 'Supersculpt Your Body' and last, but not least, reveals 'Hollywood's Sexy-Body Secret.'

What's the secret? We want Hollywood to be our measuring stick? Dara rightly says no way.

The brilliance of her book lies in answering those burning questions in the reader's mind. She addresses the hypocrisy head on by acknowledging the fine line between selling a product and selling out for the sake of your daughter's self-esteem. My oscillating mood while reading her book was in itself instructive. Why am I getting so mad? I asked myself. The answer lies in the cultural pressure we have all felt to feel good by looking good. I don't blame women's magazines per se. In fact, I love reading them myself. The danger is in sending the wrong message to your kids about what is desirable. Health, not slim limbs, is what matters.

The book's strongest takeaway is self-acceptance and the emphasis on health, not perceived heroism attained by food denial or purging. The author brightly carries the reader through her own personal journey with her daughter, Faith, a well-adjusted thirteen-year-old so aptly named it's rather scary. Having [f]aith in yourself is of the utmost importance. Dara Chadwick bravely advises us to love our Shape shape as the very thing that makes us who we are.

It is my hope I can help my own daughter navigate the tricky waters of adolescence with her dignity, and her body image, in tact. You'd Be So Pretty If...is a helpful tool to be sure we're headed on the right path. Perhaps the folks at Shape will be touched by Dara's prose, too.

I know I was.

Book Review: Dudley's Solo

Dudleys solo Kid empowerment is one of my favorite topics. Tiffany Alexander has written a sweet story about a boy named Dudley who is hearing impaired. Encouraged by his fellow choir members, Dudley decides to surprise his dad by performing an impromptu solo at their church concert. The greatest message about the book is we all have our own personal expression. Whether it is using our voices or our hands to sing, we all have something to contribute in our own personal style. Dudley's Solo is a great resource to remind kids they are unique no matter what! Tiffany's accompanying Web site is noteworthy as well.

Book 'em - The Power of Slow

Turtle who is slow I am excited beyond measure. Amazon is already carrying my forthcoming book, The Power of Slow: 101 Ways to Save Time in Our 24/7 World, which is coming out October 27, my darling sister's birthday!! My publisher sent me the St. Martin's Press fall catalog a few days ago. I almost leapt into the UPS deliveryman's arms when he brought me the package. There it was on page 99 in black and white.

Wowza.

My kids looked at me quizzically when I told them it was available for sale.

"You mean you want other people to read it, too?"

Kids. Gotta love 'em!

Stressed out? Read, says new study

My daughter screeches when she can't read before bed.

"What? But I want to reeeeeeeeead!"

Now I know why. It's the best way to relax.

The University of Sussex recently conducted a study that proves even just six minutes of reading can reduce stress levels by 68%. Listening to music came in a close second at 61%, while drinking a cup of tea or coffee landed at 54% (so much for caffeine being a stimulant!). Surprisingly, walking came in a distant fourth at 42%.

It goes to show that delving into a different world through the written word trumps all. That just warms my writer's heart to no end.

It's a Better World through BetterWorldBooks.com

Better world books This site moved me because a) I love kids; b) I love books; and c) I love the Earth. It's a triple whammy, and if you love animals, you'll know at least two of the three have something to do with them. A new for-profit online bookstore with a social and environmental company (and with free US shipping or $3.97 worldwide), BetterWorldBooks.com avoids books landing in the dumpster and into landfills.

   - Thusfar BWB has spared over 6,000 TONS from getting plopped into landfills;
    - it offsets shipping environmental costs with carbon offsets from CarbonFund.org; and
    - it avoids the minvan ride to the local Barnes & Noble for a "virgin pulp" new hardback. I know you all like the smell of bookstores. So do I. And that won't go away. Just delve your nose into your newly purchased BWB book to get the same effect.

And as if that wasn't enough, here are some other bonuses:

    - BWB books are up to 80% cheaper than new ones
    - Shipping is free!
    - Better World shares its revenues with important literacy groups like Books for Africa.

By shopping on BetterWorldBooks.com, a mom will be doing something good for the environment, teaching her children to reuse resources when possible, and helping another child somewhere in the world learn to read to boot.

Mother daughter From borrowed outfits to goofy mannerisms, there is a time when most women must sheepishly admit, "I'm turning into my mother."  But while our uncanny connections can draw us closer, sometimes these similarities can drive us up the wall. To help your readers navigate to complexities of their mother-daughter relationships, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Like Mother, Like Daughter, (Chicken Soup for the Soul, September 30, 2008, 978-1935096-07-8, $14.95) provides a collection of stories written by moms and daughters on maternal wisdom, raising teenage girls, becoming friends with Mom, grandmothers, granddaughters, and more.
