Rarely has a film gripped my heart like Red like the Sky (Rosso come il cielo), an Italian movie based on a true story of Mirco Mencacci's life. At age 10 he was blinded in a gun-shot accident. The story is told mostly from his perspective with sound being one of the main characters. Tucked away in a school for the blind in Genoa, Mirco finds himself in a lost world of unfamiliarity. Through his own ingenuity, he cuts a new path for himself and with it, a new one for everyone in his midst.
Mirco himself turned out to be one of Italy's most talented and celebrated sound editors in Italian film. This uplifting, and true, tale of a young boy's courage to dance to his own drum is encouraging and beautiful for young and old to see.
Many thanks to Spiritual Cinema Circle for distributing the film. I always smile when I see each month's issue in my mailbox. This month was no exception.
