The TV segment 'life without petroleum products' is running tonight. And I'm scared. I told my entire German-speaking network to watch it. Then I saw the four-minute video teaser they put on their Web site. It's me in full close-up. Without makeup. The show might as well have been called "Christine on the screen - unmasked and without cover-up, people." I look, well, late winter pale with a dash of blue for the fantasmo, last-minute lighting they had to bring in to make it appear later in the day than it was. By the looks of the bags under my eyes, it was way too late. Death warmed over with a sprinkle of snow. Yea, that's me.
But then again the topic was too important to let vanity get in the way. What would our lives be like if we couldn't rely on anything made of petroleum? From shoes to eye glasses to anything plastic in our kitchen, we would be up shit's creek without a paddle. Cuz that's made of petroleum, too.
And so was all my make-up. And so I agreed, cordially, to abstain from my eyeliner, blush and nose powder. It was my first national TV gig. I'll know better next time (as in, cheating for the sake of the viewer). Bayerischer Runkfunk and the gang rock. They were so kind. And I appreciate all the thinking, work, and late nights they put in to make this show what it is. And it taught me a big lesson to ask what's in the concealer they sell me before I buy it!
