My entertainment client and I went to the movie Mamma Mia last night. We called it research, but what we really wanted was some brain candy. It certainly was.
Admittedly, I'm not your typical musical fan. Moviecals are even more unnerving, especially when a heavy- hitting actor such as Meryl Streep pretends to be twenty years her own junior. At first, I thought she was miscast as the role of Donna, the hippy mother whose Greek island hotel was falling around her ears. I wondered how she could have been convinced to don those hair extensions and make a fool of herself. At one point, however, when the entire female cast ran down to the pier crowing a Hollywood version of Dancing Queen, I softened. It really looked like they were having fun.
Pierce Brosnan plays the most endearing role in the movie. Knowing his former nanny, I was impressed with his efforts. It appeared these award-laden actors are tired of the serious roles they've played in their careers. They wanted to lighten their load and entertain for the heck of it. Amanda Seyfried's singing talent carried the show - in a word, phenomenal.
Laughing out loud, my client and I left the theater in the greatest of spirits. Mamma Mia had done its job, and our sugar-shocked intellect was silenced by the simple joy of watching talented people do what they do best - make us giggle for a single moment in time.
